The Southern Museum kicks off 2011 with an exciting new family event that celebrates trains. Mommy & Me and Make It & Take It workshops make a strong return as well. Ladies, mark your calendars for a very special girls day out at the Southern Museum on February 19th for the Mother Daughter Tea. Happy New Year!
Trains Trains Trains: A Family Event
January 22, 10 AM—4 PM
No matter whether you like to ride them, watch them or build them, you'll love this family event celebrating trains! Held in the Jolley Education Center (home of the Georgia "Merci" Boxcar), visitors will take pleasure in seeing case exhibits of model and toy trains, "engineering" a train inside our diesel simulator, or operating the telegraph stations. A "white gloves" table featuring railroad artifacts will be accessible for you to touch and handle. An operating model railroad, similar to one you can build, will be setup along with advice for getting started in model railroading.
This event also includes several hands-on activities for the future railroader. Children ages six and up will enjoy "Make It and Take It" workshops where participants can design and build their own railroad bridge. Young children ages four and under will delight in exploring the Georgia W. Pierce Pre-K Room which includes a climbable "pillow" train, a model transportation center with trains and cars for play, and coloring activities. All children are invited to try on old-fashioned outfits located in the replica hotel and dry goods store, which were commonly found within railroad towns and communities.

Mother Daughter Tea
February19 • 1 PM—4 PM
The traditional Victorian tea party returns in February. Ladies, dress your Sunday best and join us for an afternoon of memory and merrymaking! In addition to tea and sandwiches, we will enjoy a fashion show, play dress up, create a make-and-take craft, as well as enjoy music and games. Like last year, we will also be taking a picture of each mother and daughter team and emailing it to you after the party. And if you have a sweet tooth, you won't want to miss the dessert finale!
A Smithsonian Institution affiliate, the Southern Museum features collections of rare Civil War weapons, uniforms and other personal items; an exciting exhibit about The Great Locomotive Chase, including a short movie; and a full-scale replica of a locomotive factory that helped rebuild the South after the war. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, $5.50 for children ages three through 12 and free children two and under.
