Special Events at the Southern Museum
The Southern Museum host a number of events throughout the year to engage our patrons and attract new visitors. We have two major events every year - Trains, Trains, Trains! held in the last weekend of January, and Railroad Rendezvous that is held in early July.
Major Annual Special Events
The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History will host the eighth annual installment of its flagship Trains, Trains, Trains! event on Saturday, January 27 and Sunday, January 28, 2018. This must-see event for families in the area will be held from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm both days.
Every year, the museum provides new and exciting family-friendly activities for kids of all ages. Guests will marvel at special O and S Gauge model train layouts and the Museums’ own layout! Along with lots of crafts and hands-on activities, guests will have the rare opportunity to board the famous General locomotive (for a small additional fee).
Smaller Special Events
Smaller annual events at the Southern Museum are held as staffing and scheduling permit.
Join us for Civil War History Day featuring weapon demonstrations, living history, quill pen writing, and more hands-on activities. Plus, Civil War historian Michael K. Shaffer will deliver three lectures: 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and noon. Regular museum admission fee applies.
Museum Day Live! is an annual celebration of boundless curiosity hosted by the Smithsonian Magazine. Participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day Live! ticket for the ticket holder and one guest.
The Southern Museum will host a seasonal event full of magical fun for families with young children. With a wizarding flair, kids and parents will visit different stations to discover the science behind potions (and even slime!), practice writing with quill pens and invisible ink, learn about stars and astronomy, make a candle, create and play with magical creatures, and even have a chance to design their own wand!
Every year consumers kick off their holiday shopping during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, starting with Black Friday and continuing through Cyber Monday. Now, there will be one more exciting shopping day sandwiched between the two— Museum Store Sunday, scheduled this year for November 26—that offers consumers, Holiday shoppers, and visitors an opportunity to give with meaning by shopping at the General Emporium while directly supporting the Southern Museum with proceeds from all purchases.
Immerse yourself in the classic story re-told throughout the museum, with vignettes highlighting the plot and interactive performers bringing the story to life! Punch your ticket aboard the Polar Express alongside the historic General locomotive, all decked out for the holiday season! Elves will re-create Santa’s Workshop in the Glover Machine Works exhibit and the Museum will be transformed into a winter wonderland.
