Eighth Annual Trains, Trains, Trains!

The Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History will host the eighth annual installment of its flagship Trains, Trains, Trains! event on Saturday, January 27 and Sunday, January 28, 2018. This must-see event for families in the area will be held from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm both days.

Bigger and better than ever, the Museum has pulled out all the stops for two incredible, fun-filled days of family oriented activities.  “Model trains are a wonderful way to bring families together,” remarks Dr. Richard Banz, executive director of the Southern Museum, “Each year we see many repeat families, many of whom stay and enjoy the event for the greater part of the day.”

This year’s Trains, Trains, Trains! features several new and expanded train layouts model railroad layouts of different scales and gauges from regional groups including

  • Athens Bend Track RailRoad Club
  • Chattanooga Modular Modelers
  • DixieLUG Lego® User Group
  • Georgia Garden Railroad Society
  • Middle Georgia Model Railroad Club
  • North Atlanta O-Gauge Railroad Club
  • North Georgia Tinplate Trackers

Activities will also include the opportunity to speak with collections staff about our many railroad artifacts on display for visitors to hold, touch, and discover how they were used.  With over 25,000 square feet of intricate and elaborate train layouts for train enthusiasts, exhibits, and interactive activities, the whole family can enjoy this extraordinary event while making memories that last a lifetime.

Our Museum Gift Shop will more than double in size for the event with new train items, lots of children’s books, and exquisite, new-to-the-museum gifts, toys, and collectibles, perfect for the train enthusiasts, kids, and fans of history!

Trains, Trains, Trains! 2018 will bring back some of last year’s favorite bluegrass musicians, an expanded General Emporium gift shop with new shirts and toys, and several interactive layouts for kids of all ages to enjoy!

Admission is $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, $5.50 for children ages 4-12, and free for children three and under.  This event is FREE for members, so be sure to make the most of your membership by attending this extraordinary event.

Ticket Information:
Can I purchase tickets in advance for the event?
Yes! Tickets can be purchased online on our website before the event. Pre-sale tickets will be available until 5:00pm Friday, January 27.
Are tickets good for Saturday or Sunday?
Pre-sale tickets are valid for one day only, either Saturday or Sunday.
Where do I check in?
If you purchase pre-sale tickets online, please check in at the "Will Call” table set up in the lobby.
Can I purchase tickets for someone else?
Yes! You can purchase pre-sale tickets for someone else and they will use your name to check in.
Are pre-sale tickets refundable?
Pre-sale tickets are not refundable, but unused tickets may be redeemed for Museum admission at a later date.
Parking & Logistics:
Parking & Shuttle Buses
There is some parking available around the Museum, but we are offering shuttle transportation from the Ben Robertson Community Center parking lot to the Museum. The Community Center is located at 2753 Watts Dr in Kennesaw. The shuttle will run every 15-20 minutes on Saturday & Sunday, between 10am and 4pm. Feel free to bring collapsible strollers on the shuttle bus! There is some parking available immediately around the Museum - refer to the Parking Map for more information.
Can I bring a stroller to the event?
Strollers are allowed but it may be a challenge to navigate them inside the museum.
What happens if it rains?
The event will take place rain or shine. All train layouts will be indoors.
Will there be food available to buy?
Yes! Our sponsor The Nest BBQ Kennesaw will have barbecue available for purchase on the front lawn! If you would rather eat indoors, their restaurant is located within walking distance of the Museum at 2921 Cherokee Street.
What is the best time to come to avoid the crowds?
Anytime is a great time to attend! Train layouts and activities are spread throughout the Museum’s 50,000 square feet, so there is plenty of room for all attendees.
Model Trains & Activities:
How many model train layouts will there be?
We will have 10 operating model train layouts set up for the event, with several that your children can operate.
What scales/gauges will the model train layouts be?
We will have a variety of layout sizes set up, from N-scale to O-gauge to Garden and more, including an operating LEGO model train.
Will there be anything else to do?
Yes! There will be other activities at the event, including a LEGO Play & Build area, a take-home craft for kids, and tables where you can explore historic train and railroad objects.
Members:
Can members attend the event for free?
Yes! Special events are always free for museum members.
Can members bring guests?
Absolutely, but guests will need to purchase a ticket separately. We encourage guests of Members to purchase pre-sale tickets to avoid waiting in the ticketing lines.
Can I purchase a membership during the event?
Of course! Staff will also be on hand to answer any questions you have about our membership program.
