Joyel Franklin Dean: Southern Railway System Collection, 1953- 1987



Julia L. Dean, granddaughter of Joeyl Franklin Dean, donated her grandfather’s Southern Railway System collection to the Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History Archives & Library on 31 May 2007.

Joeyl’s collection consists of original documents including Agreements between Southern Railway and various railroads, Constitutions of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, Operating Rules, Schedule of Wages, Time Tables, Time Books, Various forms of communication and correspondence.

This collection also contains one book entitled “Railroad Town: A Novel” written and personally signed by Tommy Campbell. The book was originally written as “Railroadin’ Came First” in 1980.

Single photocopies are available for research purposes only for a nominal fee. A list of applicable fees can be found here.

Description: Series 1 consists of Southern Railway Agreements with various railroads, Constitutions of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, Schedule of Wages, Train Orders, Regulations and Rail Pass.

Series 2 consists of Southern Railway System Time Tables

Series 3 consists of Time Books

Series 4 consists of Books of Forms

Series 5 consists of Train Orders

Series 6 consists of general correspondence

Series 7 consists of legal correspondence and documents
