Glover Machine Works Glass Plate Negative Collection
Back to Archives

J. Wilder Glover, President of the Glover Machine Works, knew the
power of photography when it came to selling Glover steam locomotives.
Photographs of the Glover engines were used for post cards, catalog
inserts, and advertising materials. From 1902 until the early 1930s,
Mr. Glover took photographs of every engine manufactured at the
Marietta, Georgia plant. Using a 6.5 x 8.5 large format
camera, Wilder took images of the engines during all stages of the
assembly process. The most significant picture, however, was taken
as each engine was brought out of the assembly shop and prepared
for shipment. Many of these photographs contain workers or members
of the Glover family.
The Glover Photograph Collection, which is comprised of over 800
glass plate negatives and thousands of photographs, contains images
of Glover family gatherings, Glover engines at work in various settings,
non-railroad related equipment manufactured at the Glover Machine
Works, and photographs of workers and machinery in the interior
of the Glover plant.
Restoring the glass plate negatives was made possible by a grant
from the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board, Georgia Department
of Archives and History, Office of Secretary of State.
