A Letter from Union soldier, William R. Donaldson, to his father, Capt. J.T. Donaldson. He describes the fighting around Big Shanty, Georgia, giving graphic details of the killing of Confederate General Polk, how dirty he and his clothes are, and how drastically his pay has been cut, but he has plenty of "hard tack & sow belly” to eat.
