Kennesaw is located approximately 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta, 45 minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and 10 minutes from Marietta. The Archives is housed inside the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History
Directions:
From I-75 Northbound or I-575 Northbound or Southbound:
Take the Chastain Road exit (#271 on I-75 or #3 on I-575) and go west. Chastain Road becomes McCollum Parkway. Go past the McCollum Airport and turn right on South Main Street. Take a right on Sardis and the Museum Archives parking lot will be on the left or you may park in back of the museum building, just off Shirley Drive.
From I-75 Southbound:
Take the Wade Green Road exit #273 and take a right. Wade Green Road will turn into Cherokee Street. The Museum Archives will be on the right hand side before the railroad tracks. You may park in back of the museum building by turning left on Shirley Drive.
From US 41:
Turn on Watts Drive going east. Turn left on Main Street, then right on Cherokee Street. The Museum Archives will be on the left. You may park in back of the museum building by turning left on Shirley Drive.

Access to the Collections:
- All material are in the public domain and are open to researchers with exception of materials designated by donors as “restricted.” For further information on our holdings, access to collections, and duplication fees, please see our website at www.southernmuseum.org or call 770.427.2117 x 3184 or x 3060.
- The Archives administer collections for the purpose of scholarly research. Access and copyright restricts may apply, particularly for non-academic uses.
- Researchers wishing to use our collections are encouraged to discuss their research project with an Archives Department staff member three days prior to visiting the Southern Museum Archives & Library.
Procedures for Use of the Collections:
It is the policy of the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History to make reasonable accommodations to insure that all qualified persons will have access to the Archives collections. All requests for access to the archives and library must be made with a member of the archives and library staff and follow the below listed procedures.
- All users must sign the Registration Log located in the front of the archives/library reading room. The researcher is required to read the Guidelines for Using Materials in the Archives/Library, fill out Research Application and Researcher Registration forms and signs both. By signing these forms, a researcher agrees to observe the following procedures.
- Users must furnish photo identification/drivers license when registering to use the Archives.
- Food and drink are not permitted in the research area. No smoking or other
tobacco use is allowed in the Archives.
- Coats, book bags, briefcases, and other personal property must be placed in
lockable storage cabinets located in the research area. Keys must be returned to
the archives staff when you check out of the facility.
- The use of personal computers is allowed. However, the use of hand-held
scanners is prohibited.
- Cellular phone and beepers must be turned off while you are in the research
area. Please refrain from cell phone in the research area.
- Materials are retrieved by archives staff based on call slips completed and
signed by the researcher.
- Ink is prohibited due to the risk of inadvertent damage to documents; notes
must be taken in pencil only.
- All stacks in the archives storage area are closed to visitors.
- Archival materials must be handled with clean hands and free of hand lotion.
- Documents must not be written on, folded, leaned on, or otherwise handled in
any way likely to damage them.
- Only one folder of materials may be opened and in use on the research table at a time. An out card will be used to mark its place in the archival box.
- All records must be kept in their present arrangement, loose pages will stay in order if turned like a book. If a mistake is discovered, please call it to the attention of an archives staff member.
- When handling photographs, researchers must wear white cotton gloves
provided by the archives.
- Photocopying is permitted, if it is in accordance with donor agreements and copyright regulations. Fragile or exceptionally valuable materials, or materials that are too large may not be copied in-house. Archives staff does all photocopying. A list of fees for photocopying, photograph reproduction, and other duplication services are available upon request and subject to change.
- Photocopies are provided for the individual researchers personal use and
may not be further reproduced, published, broadcast, displayed, offered for sale, transferred to another individual or deposited in another institution without written permission from the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History Archives and the copyright holder.
- The materials are provided for reference only. The user agrees not to publish them with the written permission of the Archives, which is obtained by completing the Request for Permission to Publish, Exhibit or Broadcast form. In no case does permission to publish imply transfer to copyright or proprietary rights. Any publication of material from the Archives must credit the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History Archives.
- The user agrees to allow the Archives staff to inspect all materials present at the research table before the researcher departs the Archives.
