Often described as the “iron horses” of the Civil War, railroads were vital to the war effort because of their contributions to troop movement, medical care, food and supplies. There are a variety of photographs and artifacts in the “Railroads” exhibit that typify train cargo of the period. You’ll find items such as medical bags and weaponry, including muskets, swords, pistols, rifles and carbines.
Also a part of the exhibit, the comprehensive James A. Liesendahl Civil War Collection and the Ralph G. Bateman Family Collection give visitors a glimpse into the lives of soldiers and citizens during the Civil War era through a wide variety of weapons and personal items including uniforms, leather goods, Bibles, musical instruments and more.
