Special Exhibits at the Southern Museum

The Working White House

This exhibit follows the lives of the maids, cooks, butlers, doormen, electricians and all of the others who have kept one of the world’s most famous homes running efficiently. Their unique stories are the subject of this exhibit – showcasing souvenirs, housekeeping implements, clothing, menus and other objects from the presidencies of William Taft through George W. Bush. "The Working White House" was developed and supported by the White House Historical Association with assistance from the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. The exhibit was organized for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.

Up Through the Rails

To celebrate and recognize the African American’s role on the railways of the South, the Southern Museum will display various images and artifacts relating to their invaluable service. The photographs and railway company articles on display will highlight the occupations they filled, including dining car porters, waiters, cooks, track gangs, firemen and machine shop workers. In addition, some of the artifacts on display will include a large-scale model of a Pullman car, a porter coat, cap and dinnerware used on various railway dining cars. Learn more here »
