Group Tours
Chase history to Kennesaw, GA, with an exciting educational student field trip or group tour for any age! The Museum provides a fun learning experience for student field trips, scout groups, Civil War interest and train clubs, senior citizen groups and other community organizations.
Group tours explore the four main areas of the Museum and discover the important role railroads play in American history. Groups may also explore the current Special Exhibit on display during their visit. (Check with the Group Tours office for more details.)
1) Railroads: Lifelines of the Civil War depicts the lives of soldiers during the conflict and the vital role railroads played in the war effort. As part of an educational student field trip, students explore the exhibits in an interactive scavenger hunt.
2) Glover Machine Works: Casting a New South discover a Post-Civil War locomotive factory located in Marietta, GA, that help rebuild the war torn south. Tour participants learn about the production process as well as the life of the factory workers.
3) Movie: The Great Locomotive Chase made exclusively for the Museum, this 25-minute movie combines excerpts from the classic Disney movie with new footage allowing young and old alike to experience the excitement of the Chase.
4) The Great Locomotive Chase story wouldn’t be complete without seeing one of the first Medals of Honor awarded to Andrews Raiders or seeing the famous locomotive central to the story, The General!
Guidelines:
- All tours must pre-register to be eligible for the listed rates. Confirmation packets will be mailed to you.
- Tour reservations must be made a minimum of 2 weeks in advance.
- Group tours must have a minimum of 10 paid admissions on the tour date. Educational student field trips must have a minimum of 10 paid student admissions on the tour date.
- Tours are limited and are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. Reservations should be made early during peak tour season.
- Please Note: Educational Student Field trip rates are exclusively offered to schools, home school organizations, and other educational institutions if they meet the tour minimum and reservation timeframe.
- Tour lengths listed are dependent upon age, number of tour participants, and a prompt arrival time.
Planning Your Tour:
Group Size
Maximum group size is 200 people (including teachers and chaperones). For groups larger than 50, tours will be subdivided to accommodate the group size.
Lunches
Groups are welcome to picnic on the Museum’s lawn. Limited indoor facilities are available for groups of 50 or less. (Check availability with the Group Tours Office)
Boxed lunch menus and ordering information from the Museum’s preferred caterers is available. Boxed lunches must be ordered from the caterer 1 week prior to your visit. Payment directly to the caterer is due the day of the tour. Box lunches are available from our preferred caterer, Adriane's Delectables (Click here for sample menus).
Parking and Directions
The Southern Museum is easily accessible from the Interstate 75 and offers free parking. Click here for directions.
For Educators:
- All Educational Field Trips include teacher resources that meet Georgia Department of Education Curriculum standards. A Curriculum Guide is received upon booking and includes pre and pos-visit activities.
- For large student groups, the Museum Gift Shop offers a souvenir grab bag program. Details are available from the Group Tours Office and must be ordered 1 week prior to your visit.
Educational Field Trip/Group Tour Options:
- For Group Tours: The group leader and bus driver are admitted free of charge
- For Educational Student Field Trips: 1 teacher/chaperone is admitted free per 10 paid student admissions. All other adults are charged the corresponding Group Rate for the tour selected.
1) The Private - Self-guided tour (1-1 1/2 hrs.)
Groups explore the permanent and temporary exhibits on their own with the help of a Museum map. A Scavenger Hunt activity is available for educational field trip groups.
Group Tour Rate: $4 per person
Educational Student Field Trip Rate: $2 per student ($4 per adult chaperone)
2) The Lieutenant - Guided tour (1 1/2 - 2 hrs.)
Groups explore the permanent and temporary exhibits with a Museum tour guide. Educational field trips include a Scavenger Hunt activity and interactive programs geared to the students’ grade level.
Group Tour Rate: $5 per person
Educational Student Field Trip Rate: $3 per student ($5 per adult chaperone)
3) The General - Guided tour with program (2 - 2 1/2 hrs.)
Groups explore the permanent and temporary exhibits with a Museum tour guide, and enjoy an interactive living history program about the life of the common Civil War soldier, this may include a weapons firing demonstration. (Upon request, the tour may be altered to include a living history presentation of a 19th Century locomotive factory worker.)
Group Tour Rate: $6 per person
Educational Student Field Trip Rate: $4 per student ($6 per adult chaperone)
