Military Timeline Comes Alive at the Southern Museum

KENNESAW, GA � Visitors will feel as if they step onto the pages of a history book during the weekend of September 29 – 30.

In History of War: A Military Timeline visitors of the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History will have the opportunity to experience the evolution of weaponry and tactics in a unique living history.

From swords to machine guns, living history interpreters and military personnel will demonstrate weapons and wartime experiences dating all the way back to Roman times.

“This is truly a unique experience that can’t be seen on television or taught from a textbook. This is history right in front of you, interacting with you,” explained Southern Museum Director of Education Jennifer Legates.

This living history event will take place at the park across the street from the Museum from 10 am to 5 pm on September 29 and from 12 pm to 4 pm on September 30. Tickets are $5 per adult, $3 per child 4-12, and free for children 3 and under.

Senior Month

September 1 – September 30
History is an ongoing process that allows each generation to pass along the stories of their lifetime. In celebration of the National Grandparents Day, the Southern Museum is offering senior citizens (60 and up) half price admission throughout the month of September. Come celebrate the past!

Mommy & Me Children's Program Series

10 am – 11 am
Free with museum admission.

Bus Tour – Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign in North Georgia

September 8 • 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
Follow in the footsteps of General Sherman’s army marching towards Atlanta in 1864 in a daylong bus tour. The day will include stops in Ringgold, Resaca Confederate Cemetery, Cassville, Allatoona Pass Battlefield and Pickett’s Mill Battlefield State Historic Site. Tour will depart/return from the Southern Museum and includes a stop for lunch (included in ticket price). Space Limited; Advance registration required by August 24, 2007 Tickets are $60; $45 for Museum members.

Homeschool Day

October 8 • 10 AM – 2 PM
Homeschool students explore the Museum's exhibits and enjoy hourly educational programs for a special rate. Reservations not required. (Please note: the Museum does not provide group tours on Homeschool Days.) $4 per student (4-12 years), $6 per student (13+) and adults, children 3 and under free.

Folk Tales of the Rails

October 13 • 4 pm – 9 pm
Pirates, settlers, and even Georgia founder, James Oglethorpe will amuse both adults and children at the annual event that is presented by the Kennesaw Parks and Recreation Department. An annual medley of entertainment consisting of storytelling, hayrides, treasure hunts and much more! Reduced museum admission. Children’s History Workshop – Old-Time Toys and Games

October 20 • 10 am – 4 pm
This new series of hands-on workshops helps bring history to life for children ages seven and up. Find out what children did for amusement before the computer age featuring 19th century interactive games, such as Quoits, Jackstraws, and Hopscotch. Space is limited and advance registration is required by October 13, 2007. Tickets are $10 per child; Museum members $7 per child.

A Smithsonian Institution affiliate, the Southern Museum features collections of rare Civil War weapons, uniforms, and other personal items; an exciting exhibit about The Great Locomotive Chase, including a short movie; a full-scale replica of a locomotive factory that helped rebuild the South after the war; and through May, a traveling exhibit featuring photographs of the people who dedicated their lives to the railroad.
