Southern Museum to Celebrate First Anniversary

KENNESAW, Ga. – Civil War soldiers and locomotive factory workers will join visitors in celebrating the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History’s anniversary weekend March 27 – 28, 2004.

“Our anniversary is a great opportunity to thank the community for its support this past year,” Museum Executive Director Jeff Drobney said. “All admissions will be $1 off, and we have a variety of fun activities planned for the weekend.”

Living histories, guided tours, and gun firing demonstrations will help mark the first anniversary of the Museum’s re-opening.

“We’re also going to have giveaways throughout the weekend from top Kennesaw retailers, including a $50 gift card from Galyan’s,” Drobney revealed.

The Museum, in affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution, re-opened March 30, 2003 after an extensive expansion project that resulted in a world-class facility 10 times larger than the original building.

Milestones marked by the Museum this year include:

  • Winning Travel Attraction of the Year Award from the Southeast Tourism Society and Best Idea – Multimedia Award from the Georgia Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus
  • Being named Favorite Historic Site for Families by readers of Our Kids Atlanta magazine
  • Hosting two Smithsonian Institution exhibitions and one other traveling exhibition
  • Acquiring Great Locomotive Chase participant Sgt. John Scott’s Medal of Honor; the James A. Liesendahl Collection; the George Wray and Family Collection; and, the Southern Railway Historical Association Archives
