Antique Autos, Popular Railroad Take Center Stage at Southern Museum Saturday

KENNESAW, Ga. – The back parking lot of the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History will become an exhibit gallery for antique automobiles Saturday, March 13.

“Between 15 and 25 historical automobiles will be on display by members of the Contemporary Historical Vehicle Association of the Etowah Bartow Region,” explained the Southern Museum’s Director of Education Jennifer Legates.

The display will be held from noon until 4:00 PM Saturday in the Museum’s back parking lot.

“During that same time, we’ll be co-hosting a lecture with the Kennesaw Historical Society (KHS) entitled ‘A Brief History of the Western and Atlantic Railroad,’” Legates revealed.

KHS President Robert Jones will tell the story of the 140-mile long W&A and what made it one of the most beloved railroads in the South. The lecture is free to the public and will be held in the Southern Museum’s conference room, which is accessible from the back entrance. Those who wish to tour the Museum before or after the lecture should enter from the front entrance.

In association with the Smithsonian, the Museum houses three impressive permanent collections focusing on the vital role of railroads during the Civil War; life at a turn-of-the-century locomotive factory; and, the Civil War’s exciting Great Locomotive Chase.

A special gallery features traveling exhibitions from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) as well as other sources.

Other upcoming events held in conjunction with the Kennesaw Historical Society include the lecture, “The Great Locomotive Dispute,” to be presented by Joe Head April 10 at 2:00 PM.

The Museum is 20 miles north of Atlanta, off I-75 at exit 273, Wade Green Road. For more information call (770) 427-2117.
