KENNESAW, GA – Prospective railroad engineers can operate a pumper car, in just one of the fun, hands-on activities planned for the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History’s education center.

The new education center was designed as a place for children in the community to enjoy an interactive, themed environment. Other activity stations will allow kids to explore the Big Shanty depot and discover the anatomy of a train.

New Education CenterSlated to open in 2007, the education center will be constructed as a result of generous donations from organizations and individuals.

“The community responded generously to our capital campaign, helping us raise $1.2 million in just eight months,” commented Kennesaw Director of Recreation and Culture Jeff Drobney.

“Thanks to their support, we will be able to broaden the educational programs we offer to include hands-on learning activities for children, summer camps, and increased space for lectures and special events. The center will also provide a work area for railroad historians who use our archives for research.”

The new education center will be located behind the Museum, near the existing parking lot.

“A significant amount of the money raised came from a TE (Transportation Enhancement) grant we received from the federal government,” Drobney said.

The following organizations helped make the $1.2 million donation: Bright Wings Foundation, Cobb County Board of Commissioners, Imlay Foundation, Publix Super Markets Charities, Woodruff Foundation, LeoDelle Lassiter Jolley Foundation, Federal Highways Administration – ISTEA.
