Fall into Fun at the Southern Museum

During a season when leaves fall and time “falls back,” the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History steps up the programming with an upbeat concert, an intriguing lecture, and an enthralling photography exhibit:

Kennesaw Historical Society Lecture Series: Rare Videos of the General Saturday, September 10, 2 – 3 PM. See rare video footage of the General as part of its 150th birthday celebration. Videos will include a 1962 Louisville & Nashville film on the refurbishment of the General, footage of the 1962 centennial visit of the General to Kennesaw, and the 1972 enshrining of the General in the Southern Museum (Big Shanty Museum at the time). The short silent movie Railroad Raiders of ‘62 will also be viewed. Visitors who would like to tour the Museum before or after the lecture should come in through the front entrance.
Picturing the Century Smithsonian Photography Exhibit July 16 – September 11. Don’t miss the last week of this enthralling photography exhibit where Americans such as JFK and the Wright Brothers are pictured at work and at play. Created by the National Archives and Records Administration and organized for travel by Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
8th Georgia Regiment Band Concert Saturday, September 17, 7 – 9 PM. Enjoy the upbeat brass tunes that Civil War soldiers laughed and danced to in both the North and South, performed by the 8th Georgia Regiment Band. The concert starts at 7 pm and will last for an hour and a half with a 10-minute intermission and visitors will be free to tour the Museum after the concert. Free for Museum members and $5 (ages 4 and up) for the general public.
Discover Hidden Treasure from the Southern Museum Archives October 1 – 31. Get a glimpse into the vault of treasures of the Archives Department during this exhibit in celebration of Georgia Archives Week (October 1 – 9). The collection includes:
- Centennial History of South Carolina Railroad, a book about the first locomotive built in America for passenger service
- A photo of a statue of Samuel Spencer, president of the Southern Railway Co.
- A letter from Union soldier, E.M. O’Brien
- A vintage map of the Battle of Allatoona Pass, GA
- A pamphlet promoting Marietta as a “Little Gem City of Georgia” and accessible by W&A Railroad
- Blueprints for repairs to passenger station at Helena, GA
Folk Tales of the Rails Saturday, October 8, 4 – 9 PM. Pirates, settlers, and even Georgia founder, James Oglethorpe, will amuse adults and children with storytelling, hayrides, and treasure hunts. Sponsored by Kennesaw Parks and Recreation and the Southern Museum.
The Southern Museum, a Smithsonian Institution affiliate, features collections of rare Civil War weapons, uniforms, and other personal items; an exciting exhibit about The Great Locomotive Chase, including a short movie; and a full-scale replica of a locomotive factory that helped rebuild the South after the war.
