EXCITING HISTORIC MOMENTS IN YOUR BACKYARD AT THE SOUTHERN MUSEUM IN JULY

KENNESAW, GA – The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History will host exciting living history encampments, the grand opening of a photography exhibit that celebrates the past 100 years of American life, and a fascinating lecture on the history of Kennesaw this July:

  • Kennesaw Historical Lecture Series: History of Kennesaw/Big Shanty. July 9, 2 – 3 pm. Learn about the W&A Railroad, Big Shanty (Kennesaw) during the Civil War, and the return of the General from local historian and Kennesaw Historical Society President Robert Jones. Co-hosted by the Kennesaw Historical Society.

“People will learn about the exciting adventures that happened in this community and even in their backyards in the last few centuries,” said Jennifer Legates, Director of Education and Public Programs.

Those who would like to tour the Museum before or after the lecture should use the front entrance.

  • Commandeering the Countryside. July 16, 10 am – 4 pm & July 17, 12 – 5 pm. The 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry will march on Big Shanty! Soldiers will hold firing demonstrations throughout the day, encamped in front of the Museum. The event is free of charge.

Created by the National Archives and Records Administration and organized for travel by Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.

  • History’s Artillery. July 30, 10 am – 4 pm & July 31, 12 pm – 4 pm. The sound of thunderous artillery will fill the air at a Civil War encampment this weekend. Firing demonstrations will be accompanied by lectures on cannons and military tactics. The event is free of charge.
