October Fun Fests at the Southern Museum

KENNESAW, GA – Discover hidden treasure, get spooked by scary storytellers, and join local heroes and legends in their quest for a good cause at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History this October:

Discover Hidden Treasures from the Southern Museum Archives October 1 – 31. Get a glimpse into the vault of treasures of the Archives Department during this exhibit in celebration of Georgia Archives Week (October 1 – 9). The collection includesitems from the Southern Railway Historical Association, Glover Machine Works and Civil War Collections, among others:

• Centennial History of South Carolina Railroad, a book about the first locomotive built in America for passenger service

•A photograph of Glover Machine Works Locomotive built for Appomattox Box Shook Company

• A Trade Catalog, Hercules (Red Strand) Wire Rope

• A letter from the State of Georgia swearing in new mayor of Machinery City (One of Georgia’s Dead Towns)

• A Route Map of the Great Locomotive Chase

• A Photograph of “The General”

• A collage of The 727th Railway Operating Battalion in World War II

Folk Tales of the Rails Saturday, October 8, 4 – 9 PM. Pirates, settlers, and even Georgia founder, James Oglethorpe, will amuse adults and children with storytelling, hayrides, and haunted houses. Get spooked at the Southern Museum during a guided tour by a friendly spirit and enjoy fall crafts, carnival games, and stories. Sponsored by Kennesaw Parks and Recreation and the Southern Museum.

Heroes & Legends Benefit October 15, 6:30 PM. Cobb Galleria Centre. Cobb leaders and history enthusiasts will raise money for a new education center at the Kennesaw Museum Foundation’s annual Heroes & Legends gala, sponsored by Cobb Energy.Starting at 6:30 pm, guests will be treated to blackjack and roulette, followed by a gourmet meal and a live auction. The Southern Museum, a Smithsonian Institution affiliate, features collections of rare Civil War weapons, uniforms, and other personal items; an exciting exhibit about The Great Locomotive Chase, including a short movie; and a full-scale replica of a locomotive factory that helped rebuild the South after the war.
