SMITHSONIAN EXHIBITION COMES TO SOUTHERN MUSEUM
A traveling exhibition featuring pictures of America’s history from the Smithsonian will be featured at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw July 16 through September 11. The exhibition, titled, “Picturing the Century: One Hundred Years of Photography from the National Archives,” features photographs from the National Archives that celebrate the past 100 years of American life. The pictures depict breathtaking views of the American West, nostalgic images of rural America, emotion-filled portraits of urban blight; and snapshots of Americans at work and play.
Special guest Dr. Bruce Bustard, senior curator for the National Archives Museum Programs, will lead two tours through the exhibition on Saturday, July 16 at 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM. Members of the Southern Museum may view the exhibit in a special members only preview on July 15, 2005.
“Picturing the Century: One Hundred Years of Photography from the National Archives” was created by the National Archives and Records Administration and highlights major events from the past 100 years including the Wright brothers’ first flight, the construction of the Empire State Building, Omaha Beach, and the Persian Gulf War. Other images provide historic glimpses of America’s rural and urban landscapes as well as reflect times of economic or social change.
The Southern Museum, a Smithsonian Institution affiliate, features collections of rare Civil War weapons, uniforms, and other personal items; an exciting exhibit about The Great Locomotive Chase, including a short movie; and a full-scale replica of a locomotive factory that helped rebuild the South after the war.
The Southern Museum is located 20 miles north of Atlanta, off I-75 at exit 273 For more information, visit www.southernmuseum.org or call (770) 427-2117.
