Preserving the Museum of You
Have you ever wondered how to save your wedding dress, favorite piece of china, or your old love letters? Come learn the techniques in preserving and storing valuable items and the causes of their deterioration from Smithsonian Institution conservator Don Williams and author Louisa Jaggar, co-authors of the new book Saving Stuff: How to Care for and Preserve Your Collectibles, Heirlooms, and other Prized Possessions.
The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History is offering an interactive workshop to learn the art of preserving your most precious things hosted by authors Williams and Jaggar. The workshop will be held Tuesday, June 21, from 7-9 PM at the Museum.
“This workshop is about maintaining your own Museum – your personal memories,” said Jennifer Legates, director of education. “People will find out how to preserve collector’s items like baseball cards or how to save a gorgeous wedding dress for a bride’s daughters or granddaughters.”
Bring your most valuable possession, be it a photograph of your parents, a piece of your Grandmother’s china, or your second-grade finger painting, to learn the specifics of storing and caring for your personal heirlooms,
The cost of the workshop is $5 for members, $7 for non-members. Space is limited so please RSVP to (770) 427-2117 ext. 100. The workshop is part of the Smithsonian Affiliations program.
The Southern Museum, a Smithsonian Institution affiliate, features collections of rare Civil War weapons, uniforms, and other personal items; an exciting exhibit about The Great Locomotive Chase, including a short movie; and a full-scale replica of a locomotive factory that helped rebuild the South after the war.
