Traveling Trunks

*New Addition!*

Bring history into your classroom with the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History traveling trunks! These trunks will assist teachers in meeting the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) and allow students to explore reproduction artifacts using a hands-on approach to learning. The Southern Museum is offering two Traveling Trunks:

Rails and Reconstruction

The “Rails and Reconstruction” Traveling Trunk is designed to help your students gain a deeper understanding of the period after the Civil War. Use of reproduction artifacts such as a lantern, signal flags and a railroad lock to examine the changes the Reconstruction era and railroads ushered into American history. Using a hands-on history approach, explore some of the everyday objects that played a role in the lives of those who worked and traveled by rail and in reforming the nation after the war.

Civil War at Home

The Civil War at HomeTraveling Trunk provides reproduction artifacts, books, music and various materials which allow teachers to enhance classroom instruction. The trunk encourages a greater interest in the Civil War by exploring a soldier’s experiences on the battlefield and in camp. In addition, students will gain an understanding of family life on the home front through the examination of period objects.

Traveling Trunks are available for weekly rental at $50 per week. These trunks are designed to be either added on to your museum visit as a pre-visit or post-visit activity or a teaching resource on its own. All requests must be made two weeks in advance to pick-up and on a first come first serve basis. To reserve the traveling trunk of your choice please contact the Museum Tour Coordinator at 770.427.2117, ext 3174 or at programs@southernmuseum.org
