Homeschool Day is held on the first Monday of each month from 10 AM – 2 PM Homeschool students of all ages can now explore the Southern Museum’s exhibits for a special rate. On any given month, attendees may participate in guide tours through the galleries, hands-on activities and take-home craft projects. All parent educators will receive a take-home packet to enhance the day’s lesson. Special admission rates: per person, program is recommended for elementary school-aged children. Reservations are required, one week prior to the Homeschool Day, starting January 2012.

Special Activities on actual sesquicentennial of Great Locomotive April 12, 2012 will mark the 150th anniversary of the actual event in which James Andrews and a group of Union raiders captured the locomotive “General” in Big Shanty (modern Kennesaw) only to be pursued and caught by William Fuller and Confederates using over the course of the chase three different locomotives most notably the “Texas.” 6:00 am - Breakfast at Trackside Grill 8:30 am - Proclamation at Historic 1908 Kennesaw Depot 9:30 am - Museum opens, free admission all day. 6:30 pm - Dinner at Trackside Grill (SOLD OUT) 8:00 pm - Dessert at the Southern Museum with special guest, folk singer, Bobby Horton

* Camp McDonald: Living HistoryCamp McDonald: Living History

Several local re-enactment units unite to recreate and interpret Camp McDonald, the Confederate encampment located across the tracks from the Lacy Hotel where on the morning of April 12, 1862 the Great Locomotive Chase began. Event is to take place on the lawn across the street from the Southern Museum. Admission of $ 5 for adults and $ 2 for children will allow you access to both Museum and Re-Enactment.
