Railroad Rendezvous | Southern Museum

Family-Friendly Event! Fun for Kids of All Ages!

Follow the tracks to family fun at Railroad Rendezvous!

What to Expect

Each year during July, the museum introduces new and exciting family-friendly activities for kids of all ages. Guests will have the opportunity to marvel at a special model train layout as well as the museums’ own layout where kids can even decorate and add their own personalized buildings! Along with other crafts and hands-on activities, guests will have the rare opportunity to board the famous General locomotive (for a small additional fee).

“We are thrilled to bring new activities to this event in 2018! Railroad Rendezvous is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face as they see all that railroading has to offer,” says Dr. Richard Banz, the Southern Museum’s Executive Director. “From layouts to crafts, bluegrass bands to railroad jobs…we’ve got it all this year and we can’t wait for this to be part of your summer fun! Hop aboard the General and soak up the memories!”

As in years past, bluegrass bands will bring festive music to the event. Our littlest visitors will even create their own hand-made instruments! During the event, be sure to stop by the photo booth, specially set up for Railroad Rendezvous and share your memories using #SummerAtTheSouthern.

Opportunity to Tour the Museum

In addition to the day’s special event activities, visitors can explore the Museum’s permanent exhibits to learn about the Great Locomotive Chase, one of the Civil War’s most thrilling episodes. The Museum also includes a full-scale replica of The Glover Machine Works, a locomotive factory in nearby Marietta that helped rebuild the South after the war. Railroad Rendezvous is a fun opportunity for families to enjoy the Museum and learn about the jobs of railroad workers like conductors, gandy dancers, and porters.
